OVH raised prices on 1 October, Hetzner in June

Since 1 October, OVH renews its Advance, Scale, High Grade and Game dedicated servers at higher prices, and Public Cloud bills the public IPv4 address and the local disk separately. Hetzner put its prices up in June, but only for new servers and resizes.

Check in the OVH control panel when your servers renew: every renewal is now at the new price. On Hetzner, don’t resize or delete servers until you have worked out the new price.

OVH dedicated servers: a new price at renewal

According to OVH’s post of 17 August, the change covers the Advance, Scale and High Grade ranges (Gen 2024 and 2026) and Game Gen 2026. A server without a commitment gets the new price at its first renewal from 1 October; one with a commitment, when the commitment ends.

Here is the example from OVH’s post, in euros per month excluding VAT: an ADVANCE-1 with 128 GB of RAM and four NVMe disks. I worked out the Gen 2026 amounts the same way OVH did.

ADVANCE-1 with 128 GB RAM and 4×960 GB NVMe, EUR per monthGen 2024: until 30 Sep €189.99, renewal from 1 Oct €230.79 (+21.5%), new order €326.99 (+72.1%). In this example, renewal adds 21.5% (Gen 2024) and 41.2% (Gen 2026) to the bill; for some configurations, such as GAME-1 Gen 2026, the price doubles.

The “Commit” button in the “My offer” box fixes the rate for 12 months or longer, paid upfront and starting at your next renewal. A commitment made now is at the new price, so compare it with a Rise server or another provider before you pay.

OVH Public Cloud: IPv4 and local disk billed separately

B3, C3 and R3 instances used to include the local disk and the public IPv4 address. From 1 October they are separate invoice items. An instance costs 1.4–21.9% more, small machines the most.

The bill for one c3-8 instance

c3-8 instance in OVH Public CloudUntil 30 September €66.65. From 1 October plus a 100 GB local disk €10.64 and a public IPv4 €1.97, €79.26 in total (+18.9%). 1. Until 30 September a c3-8 cost €66.65 a month excluding VAT, with the 100 GB disk and the public IPv4 address included.
  2. From 1 October the local disk is a separate item: €10.64 a month.
  3. The public IPv4 address adds €1.97. Total €79.26, 18.9% more.
  4. Without a public IPv4 address, going out to the internet through an existing Gateway, the instance costs €77.29.

An address costs about €2 a month, so there is no rush, and releasing one is a job for whoever runs your servers. A released address can’t be recovered, and the instance also loses its public IPv6, SSH access from the internet and, if there is no Gateway on the private network, outbound traffic to the internet too. Keep any address that is in DNS, on someone’s allowlist or used for sending mail.

Hetzner: higher prices for new servers and resizes

Since 15 June, Hetzner charges the new prices for new orders and every resize. Servers you already have keep the price they had before 15 June. The CX and CAX ranges went up by about a third, and CPX and CCX in Germany and Finland now cost 2.1 to 2.75 times as much: a new CCX23 costs €85.99 instead of €31.49 a month excluding VAT.

The new prices also apply when you scale a server down or restore a deleted one. A CPX32 ordered before June for €13.99 costs €19.49 once you shrink it to a CPX22.

Since 26 June, Hetzner has limited the creation of new cloud servers for new customers and randomly selected existing ones. That was still the case on 8 October. Don’t delete a server you want to recreate later, and check what your autoscaling does when a new machine doesn’t appear.

What to do, depending on what you run

You run What to do
OVH Advance, Scale, High Grade; Game Gen 2026 Check the renewal date. Don’t commit upfront if you plan to leave.
OVH Public Cloud B3, C3, R3 Have whoever runs your servers release unneeded IPv4 addresses one at a time.
OVH Public Cloud B2, C2, R2 Check your October invoice. One OVH post says IPv4 is billed on all ranges, the other only on B3, C3 and R3.
OVH Kimsufi, So you Start, Rise, servers before Gen 2024 Nothing: this rise doesn’t affect you.
Hetzner, existing servers Don’t resize or delete without working out the price.
Hetzner, new cloud servers Compare with a dedicated server and have a plan B if none can be created.

Leaving AWS after the price rises

Comparisons of AWS and Hetzner made before June are out of date, because a move is always a new order. What is still relatively cheap: the CX and CAX ranges, if you can create them, and dedicated servers such as the AX42-1. I’ve redone the example on the cloud exit page with the new prices: for a steady workload, dedicated servers still come out cheaper than AWS. The calculator uses the same prices, so you can put in your own bill.

Order and test the target servers before you switch off the old environment or let your AWS Reserved Instances or Savings Plans lapse.
