A game server that does not lag. Even at the peak.

I tune game servers, forums and databases for heavy evening traffic. A steady tick rate, low latency, and hardware chosen for the load.

A schema, not a measurement. The load peaks in the evening; in the RPG case the record is about 900 players at once on the game server and over 2,000 at once on the forum.

What I do

  • Game server profiling: CPU, memory, tick rate, garbage-collection pauses.
  • Tuning the game database and cache for fast, dense traffic.
  • Choosing the hardware: a dedicated server or a VPS, close to the players.
  • A forum and a voice server for the community.
  • Backups, and latency monitoring.

Where lag comes from

Rarely from a server that is “too weak”. The game loop usually runs on a single thread, so what counts is the speed of one core, not how many there are. One slow database query during a tick stops every player at once. Scripts and mods add work to every tick, and hardly anyone measures it. On a cheap VPS, neighbours take CPU in the evening, exactly when most people play. And a player on the other side of Europe will have a higher ping than one who lives next to the data centre, whatever the hardware.

How I work

  1. I get access to the server and a description of when it lags: what time, with how many players, what is happening in the game.
  2. I measure at peak: tick time, load per core, database queries, memory pauses.
  3. You get the causes in order: what to fix now, what needs script changes, and what needs different hardware.
  4. I make the changes myself or with your team, and measure again at the next peak.

If the lag comes from scripts you write yourselves, I show which parts take the most tick time. Rewriting them is work for a game developer.

Example

Since 2020 I have run the infrastructure of an RPG gaming community: more than 115,000 unique players, a record of about 900 players at once on the game server and more than 2,000 people at once on the forum. The whole story.

Price

I quote after a short call and a look at the server. A one-off review of a single server is on the pricing page.

Describe your situation in a few sentences

I will reply with questions, or straight away with a proposal and a price.

From a case study: since 2020 I have run a game server with a record of about 900 players at once. See the case study
